ANOINTING

OLD TESTAMENT

Exodus 25:6 olive oil for the lamps; spices for the anointing oil and the fragrant incense;

Exodus 28:41 Clothe your brother, Aaron, and his sons with these garments, and then anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they can serve as my priests.

Exodus 29:7 Then take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.

Exodus 29:21 Then take some of the blood from the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and his sons and on their garments. In this way, they and their garments will be set apart as holy.

Exodus 29:36 Each day you must sacrifice a young bull as a sin offering to purify them, making them right with the Lord. Afterward, cleanse the altar by purifying it; make it holy by anointing it with oil.

Exodus 30:25 You shall make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Exodus 30:31 And say to the people of Israel, „This holy anointing oil is reserved for me from generation to generation.

Exodus 40:10 Anoint the altar of burnt offering and its utensils to consecrate them. Then the altar will become absolutely holy.

Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners set free. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of God’s favor has come, and that now they will be praised.

Isaiah 45:1 This is what the Lord says to Cyrus, his anointed one, whose right hand he will empower. Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear. Their fortress gates will be opened, never to shut again.

2Kings 9:3 and pour the oil over his head. Say to him, „This is what the Lord says: I anoint you to be the king over Israel.‟ Then open the door and run for your life!

Psalm 18:50 You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.

Psalm 133:1-3 How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the LORD has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting.

Psalm 28:8 The Lord gives his people strength. He is a safe fortress for his anointed king.

Psalm 45:7 You love justice and hate evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

Psalm 89:20–21 I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil. I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong.

Daniel 9:24 A period of seventy sets of seven[a] has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

Habakkuk 3:13 You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones. You crushed the heads of the wicked and stripped their bones from head to toe.

Zechariah 4:14 Then he said to me, “They represent the two anointed ones who stand in the court of the Lord of all the earth.”

Leviticus 8:10-12 Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the Tabernacle and everything in it, making them holy. 11 He sprinkled the oil on the altar seven times, anointing it and all its utensils, as well as the washbasin and its stand, making them holy. 12 Then he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron‟s head, anointing him and making him holy for his work.

 1 Samuel 2:10 Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives power to his king; he increases the strength of his anointed one. 

1 Samuel 2:35 Then I will raise up a faithful priest who will serve me and do what I desire. I will establish his family, and they will be priests to my anointed kings forever. 

2 Samuel 5:3 So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord with all the elders of Israel. And they anointed him king of Israel. 

1 Samuel 9:16 About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him to be the leader of my people, Israel. He will rescue them from the Philistines, for I have looked down on my people in mercy and have heard their cry. 

1 Samuel 15:1 One day Samuel said to Saul, “It was the Lord who told me to anoint you as king of his people, Israel. Now listen to this message from the Lord! 

1 Samuel 16:3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.

 1 Samuel 16:11-13 Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” “Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.” So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him. So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

 1 Samuel 24:6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.” 

1 Samuel 26:9 “No!” David said. “Don’t kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord’s anointed one?

 2 Samuel 5:3 So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord with all the elders of Israel. And they anointed him king of Israel. 

1 Kings 19:16 Then anoint Jehu grandson of Nimshi to be king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from the town of Abel-meholah to replace you as my prophet. 

2 Kings 9:6 So Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet poured the oil over Jehu’s head and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the Lord’s people, Israel.

NEW TESTAMENT 

1 John 2:20 You have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have the knowledge.

1 John 2:27 But the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. For the anointing you received teaches you about everything, and it is true; it is no lie. And it teaches you to remain in Christ, just as it has already taught you.

James 5:14-15 Is anyone among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church to come and pray for them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will heal the sick person, and the Lord will make them well. And if they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Acts 10:38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free.

Luke 7:46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

Mark 6:13 And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.

Acts 10:37–38 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism. And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Hebrews 1:8–9 But to the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice. You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.
