SUFFERING

The Biblical explaination on suffering has long been a topic of profound contemplation and debate. For centuries, theologians, scholars, and believers have grappled with the question of why suffering exists and its underlying causes. One perspective, deeply rooted in Christian theology, attributes suffering not to the will of a benevolent God but rather to the malevolent influence of unclean spirits, led by the figure of Satan.

Understanding this perspective involves exploring how Scripture addresses the profound question of suffering’s existence and its theological implications.

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” ( Luke 11:24 )

Etymology

Greek

The Greek word for “suffering” is “πάθος” (pathos). This term encompasses the idea of undergoing or enduring pain, distress, or hardship. In ancient Greek philosophy, “pathos” was often associated with the passions or emotions that individuals experience in response to external circumstances.

Hebrew:

In Hebrew, the concept of suffering is often conveyed through various words and phrases in the Old Testament. One of the primary Hebrew words for suffering is “עני” (oni), which denotes affliction, distress, or adversity.  Additionally, the Hebrew word “יסורים” ( yissurim) refers to discipline or correction, which can also involve suffering as a means of growth or purification.

Sufferings Due To Unclean Spirits

The term “unclean soul” (agathartan fenevuma) signifies a spiritual defilement beyond mere surface contamination, suggesting a deep-seated corruption of the individual’s essence. The subsequent descriptors— “dried up” (anytrome), “place” (tophone), and “in search of rest” (siton anapa soon)—underscore the restless and desolate state of the afflicted soul, unable to find solace or peace. Central to this interpretation is the recognition of unclean spirits as agents of spiritual corruption and suffering. Drawing from biblical teachings, these entities are depicted as adversaries opposed to the divine will, actively seeking to crush individuals, destroy families, and sow chaos in their wake. The Greek word akarthan reinforces this understanding, painting a bleak portrait of spiritual decay and irredeemable defilement.

Implications for Understanding Suffering:

By attributing suffering to the machinations of unclean spirits rather than divine punishment, this perspective offers a profound reassessment of human affliction. It invites us to view suffering not as a consequence of God’s wrath but as a battleground in the ongoing struggle between good and evil. Moreover, it underscores the importance of spiritual discernment and vigilance in confronting the forces of darkness that threaten to engulf us.

Jesus’ Healing Ministry:

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus confronts and casts out evil spirits as part of His ministry of healing and deliverance.

News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.
( Matthew 4:24 )

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. ( Mark 1: 32-34 )

These accounts affirm the reality of demonic oppression and the compassionate response of Jesus to those suffering under its influence. Our struggle is not merely against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. This verse underscores the spiritual dimension of human suffering and the ongoing battle believers face in confronting these forces.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ( Ephesians 6:12 )

Believers are urged to be alert and sober-minded because the devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of suffering. ( 1 Peter 5: 8-9 )

This passage emphasizes the importance of spiritual discernment and vigilance in resisting the schemes of the enemy.

Job’s Afflictions:

The Book of Job presents a profound exploration of human suffering. Job’s afflictions are not depicted as divine punishment for his sins but rather as part of a larger cosmic struggle between God and Satan. Job’s trials serve to test his faith and demonstrate his righteousness. 1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

He had seven sons and three daughters ( Job 1:2 )

6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” 8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” 9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” 12 The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. ( Job 1: 6-12 )

Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh:

In apostle Paul speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” that tormented him. Paul describes it as a “messenger of Satan” sent to torment him. This passage illustrates the reality of spiritual warfare and the presence of malevolent forces that seek to hinder believers.

or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. ( 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 )

The Perpetual Battle: Biblical Insights on Spiritual Warfare In the journey of faith, believers encounter not only the joys of redemption but also the relentless assaults of spiritual adversaries.

Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” ( Luke 11:26 )

Thus, it warns against complacency and spiritual apathy and illustrates how the enemy exploits vulnerabilities and seeks to reinvade the lives of believers who grow lax in their spiritual disciplines. The transformed state of the house symbolizes the sanctified life of a believer, while the return of the evil spirit underscores the ongoing threat posed by spiritual adversaries. It illuminates the reality, offering profound insights into the ongoing struggle against evil forces even after deliverance. Further, Jesus says in His parable wherein an evil spirit is cast out of a man, instead of finding rest, the expelled spirit roams, seeking refuge. Upon returning to the original dwelling, it discovers the environment transformed – clean, orderly, and filled with prayerful devotion. Yet, undeterred, it resolves to gather reinforcements, with the intent to launch a renewed assault.

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
( Matthew 12: 43-45 )

This narrative serves as a powerful allegory of the Christian life. Upon accepting Christ, individuals experience deliverance from sin and spiritual bondage. However, this victory does not signal an end to the spiritual battle; rather, it inaugurates an ongoing struggle against the forces of darkness. Scripture affirms the reality of spiritual warfare throughout both the Old and New Testaments.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” ( 2 Corinthians 10: 3-4 )

In this passage, Paul contrasts the nature of spiritual warfare with earthly warfare. He emphasizes that the weapons believers use in spiritual battles are not physical but are empowered by God to demolish strongholds. This reinforces the spiritual dimension of the Christian life and the importance of relying on God’s strength and weaponry to overcome spiritual adversaries. Moreover, Apostle Peter exhorts believers to

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” ( 1 Peter 5:8 )

This admonition reinforces the need for vigilance and spiritual discernment in navigating the spiritual battlefield.

The Consequences of Forsaking Prayer and God’s Commandments

In the realm of spirituality redemption, and deliverance are transformative experiences that bring profound blessings and freedom from afflictions. However, the Scriptures warn us that even a small deviation from the path of righteousness can invite greater suffering and bondage.

The dominion of darkness

Once a family has experienced redemption and deliverance, they are no longer under the dominion of darkness. However, the enemy, Satan, seeks to exploit any opening to regain influence over their lives. Even a seemingly minor sin can provide a foothold for the enemy, leading to a resurgence of suffering and affliction. Believers are warned not to give the devil a foothold, emphasizing the importance of maintaining spiritual vigilance.

In your anger do not sin” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. ( Ephesians 4:27 )

Similarly, cautions about the return of evil spirits to a person whose house is left empty and unguarded are also mentioned in the Bible The importance of being spiritually fortified and guarded. Without proper protection, one becomes vulnerable to spiritual attack and plunder.

“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.”
( Luke 11: 21-22 )

Neglect of Prayer and God's Commandments

Despite receiving abundant blessings and miraculous healings, some individuals veer away from their prayer life and disregard God’s commandments. This spiritual negligence stems from selfishness and ingratitude, which reopen the door for Satan’s influence. The cares and pleasures of this world can choke the spiritual life of believers, rendering them unfruitful.

14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. ( Luke 8:14 )

The importance of obedience to God’s commands, warning against the consequences of knowing what is right but failing to do it.

17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. ( James 4:17 )

The Role of Fellowship

Fellowship with believers and spiritual mentors is vital for sustaining spiritual growth and protection. Those who isolate themselves from the community of faith are vulnerable to the schemes of the enemy. Believers are exhorted not to forsake the assembling of themselves together, emphasizing the mutual encouragement and accountability found in fellowship.

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. ( Hebrews 10:25 )

The strength is derived from companionship and support.

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
( Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 )

The consequences of neglecting prayer, God’s commandments, and fellowship with believers are dire. Spiritual complacency opens the door for Satan to reassert his influence, leading to greater suffering and bondage. Therefore, let us remain steadfast in our devotion to God, mindful of the warnings and exhortations found in Scripture. By heeding these truths, we can safeguard our spiritual well-being and continue to experience the fullness of God’s blessings and deliverance.

The Dynamics of Spiritual Bondage and Deliverance

In the spiritual realm, the presence of evil spirits can lead to bondage and suffering in individuals’ lives. However, through deliverance, the authority of these spirits is nullified, rendering them powerless. And through deliverance in the name of Jesus, the shift in authority occurs and a person is set free from demonic influence.

The Authority of Evil Spirits

Evil spirits possess the ability to gather and exert influence over individuals, causing spiritual, emotional, and physical harm. They operate under the authority granted to them by the presence of sin and spiritual vulnerability. It also, depicts how an unclean spirit, once cast out, seeks to return and finds seven other spirits more wicked than itself to inhabit the empty vessel.

Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
( Acts 19: 13-16 )

The account of the seven sons of Sceva encountering a man possessed by an evil spirit illustrates the danger of attempting to confront spiritual forces without genuine authority. This passage underscores the relentless nature of demonic oppression and the importance of complete deliverance.

The Impact of Deliverance

When a person receives deliverance from demonic bondage, a significant shift in authority occurs. The power and authority of Jesus Christ, who performed the deliverance, supersedes that of the evil spirits, rendering them powerless over the individual. Jesus’ disciples rejoiced because even demons submitted to them in Jesus’ name.

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” ( Luke 10: 17-20 )

This passage illustrates the authority believers possess through Christ to confront and overcome demonic forces.

The Struggle of Evil Spirits

Despite their efforts to maintain control, evil spirits inevitably struggle when confronted with the authority of Jesus Christ. They are compelled to relinquish their hold over individuals who receive deliverance, as their legal right is revoked through the intervention of divine authority. The story of a boy possessed by a mute spirit, whom Jesus commanded to come out. The spirit convulsed the boy but eventually departed at Jesus’ rebuke.

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit.
“You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out.
The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.”
27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer. ( Mark 9: 25-29 )

This narrative demonstrates the struggle of evil spirits when confronted with the authority of Christ. The dynamics of spiritual bondage and deliverance reveal a profound shift in authority when individuals encounter the power of Jesus Christ. Through deliverance, the authority of evil spirits is nullified, and individuals are set free from bondage and oppression. Jesus proclaims His mission to “preach good news to the poor… to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” This encapsulates Jesus’ ministry of setting people free from various forms of bondage, including spiritual oppression.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. ( Luke 4: 18-19 )

Finding Freedom from Suffering: The Healing Touch of Jesus

In the Gospel of Luke, there’s a profound account of Jesus encountering a woman who had been bound by suffering for nearly two decades. This woman’s plight resonates deeply with the human experience of enduring pain and affliction.

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. ( Luke 13: 10-13 )

For eighteen years, this woman had been crippled by an oppressive spirit, rendering her unable to stand upright. Imagine the weight of such a burden — the physical discomfort, the social isolation, and the emotional anguish she must have endured. Every day marked by the same struggle, the same limitations, and the same sense of helplessness. Yet, amid her suffering, this woman finds herself in the presence of Jesus. He sees her. He calls her forward. And with a simple declaration, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity,” Jesus changes everything. With a touch of His hand, the chains of her affliction are shattered. In an instant, her body, once contorted and constrained, is restored to wholeness.

The joy and relief she must have felt as she stood tall for the first time in so long are beyond words. This encounter speaks to the profound compassion and power of Jesus. He doesn’t pass by the suffering; He confronts it head-on. He doesn’t offer empty platitudes or temporary fixes; He brings true and lasting liberation. In a world where suffering often feels relentless and overwhelming, the story of the bent woman offers hope. It reminds us that no matter how long we’ve been bound by pain, no matter how deep our afflictions may run, there is always the possibility of freedom. Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to Him, trusting in His ability to bring healing and restoration. Through His compassionate touch, we can find release from our suffering and, like the woman in the synagogue, lift our voices in praise to God. By understanding the biblical principles underlying spiritual warfare and deliverance, believers can confidently confront and overcome the forces of darkness

Satan’s Deceptive Tactics: Bringing Suffering

Satan, the adversary, employs cunning strategies to infiltrate the lives of believers, leading them astray and causing suffering. Here are some of the deceptive tactics Satan uses to re-enter and the consequent suffering that ensues, supported by biblical proof.

Contemplating Against the Holy Spirit:

One of Satan’s tactics is to plant seeds of doubt and rebellion against the Holy Spirit within believers. By fostering scepticism and questioning the work of the Spirit, he seeks to weaken their faith and open the door for his influence. It warns against blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, emphasizing the seriousness of rejecting the Spirit’s guidance.

31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. ( Matthew 12: 31-32 )

Acts 5 recounts the story of Ananias and Sapphira, who lied to the Holy Spirit, facing severe consequences for their deception.

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” ( Acts 5: 3-4 )

Misinterpreting and Disrespecting the Word of God: Satan distorts and misinterprets the implications of God’s Word, leading believers astray and causing confusion. By undermining the authority and truth of Scripture, he seeks to create doubt and disobedience among believers. Further, cautions against twisting Scripture to one’s destruction, highlighting the dangers of misinterpretation.

16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. ( 2 Peter 3:16 )

Satan’s attempt to misquote Scripture to tempt Jesus, demonstrating his deceptive tactics.

6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ( Matthew 4: 6-7)

Fostering Pride and Intellectual Arrogance:

Another tactic of Satan is to instill pride and arrogance in believers, convincing them of their intellectual superiority and leading them to reinterpret God’s Word according to their own understanding. This prideful attitude blinds believers to the truth and opens the door for Satan’s influence. It warns against pride, stating that it precedes destruction.

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. ( Proverbs 16:18 )

Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. ( 1 Corinthians 8:1 )

It cautions against knowledge that puffs up, emphasizing the importance of humility in understanding God’s truth.

Other Deceptive Tactics:

Satan employs a myriad of other deceptive tactics, including temptation, division, and distraction, to re-enter the lives of believers and bring suffering. By enticing believers with worldly pleasures, sowing discord among brethren, and diverting their focus from God, he seeks to undermine their faith and spiritual well-being. Believers are warned against being lured by one’s desires, which can lead to sin and death.

but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their evil desire and enticed.
15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown
, gives birth to death. ( James 1: 14-15 )

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
( Romans 16: 17-18 )

It admonishes believers to avoid divisions and distractions caused by false teachings and deceptive schemes.

Living by the Word

Escaping the Grip of Evil Spirits through Obedience

n a world fraught with spiritual warfare, obedience to the Word of God is paramount for safeguarding oneself against the deceptive tactics of evil spirits. The significance of living according to divine verses is the way to escape from the attacks of the enemy and prevent suffering.

The Importance of Obedience to Divine Verses:

Obedience to the Word of God serves as a shield against the onslaught of evil spirits, providing guidance and protection for believers. By aligning one’s life with divine principles, individuals can thwart the enemy’s attempts to infiltrate their hearts and minds. Psalm 119 declares that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, illuminating the way forward and guarding against spiritual darkness.

( Psalm 119: 105 )

Proverbs 4 admonishes believers to hold fast to God’s instructions, for they are life-giving and protective.

Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. ( Proverbs 4:13 )

The Dangers of Disobedience:

Disobedience to the Word of God opens the door for evil spirits to re-enter and wreak havoc in the lives of individuals and nations. History bears witness to the consequences of straying from God’s commands, as disobedience invites suffering and spiritual oppression. It warns of the curses that befall those who disobey God’s commandments, including sickness, famine, and captivity.

However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: 16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. 17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. 18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. 19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. 20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him ( Deuteronomy 28: 15-20 )

The Believers emphasized the importance of heeding God’s voice and walking in obedience to avoid calamity.

23 but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. 24 But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward. ( Jeremiah 7: 23-24 )

The Call to Spiritual Vigilance:

In the spiritual landscape of world, where diverse beliefs and practices abound, there is a pressing need for believers to rise with spiritual power and fervently pursue obedience to the Word of God. Only by steadfastly adhering to divine truth can individuals and the nation as a whole escape the grip of evil spirits and the ensuing suffering. The reality of spiritual warfare and the necessity of standing firm against the schemes of the devil.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ( Ephesians 6:12 )

14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
( 2 Chronicles 7:14 )

Here it offers a promise of restoration and healing for nations that humble themselves, pray, seek God’s face, and turn from their wicked ways. Obedience to the Word of God is the antidote to the attacks of evil spirits and the key to preventing suffering in the lives of believers and nations. By living according to divine verses, individuals can fortify themselves against spiritual warfare and experience the abundant life that God promises to those who walk in obedience. Let us continue to stand firm in the authority of Jesus Christ, knowing that He has given us the power to overcome every obstacle and experience freedom in Him. And also heed the call to spiritual vigilance and rise with spiritual power, anchoring ourselves in the unchanging truth of God’s Word to safeguard our lives and our nation from the schemes of the enemy.
